What happens in a lesson:
We address individual technique and questions, learning about different players and the heritage of the music. You will learn a tune in the easy traditional way - small segments, bit by bit, until we can play the entire tune together. First I will play a phrase and then we will play it together a few times. We continue until we get to the end of the tune. This starts to get the tune into your fingers.
In an online lesson, you can play along with me by muting your mic temporarily. We discuss how it went, and we also often play in ‘conversation mode’ (each of us alternating phrases.) I’ll record your tune slowly, to take home and use for practice. You may surprise yourself with how quickly you will pick up the tune in this way, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. I will help you become the best Irish traditional musician you can be. One tune at a time.
“I have personally observed Lesl in teaching mode. She has great taste in matching the difficulty level of the piece to the abilities of the student, and she is encouraging and patient with her students. Her forte is the authentic East Galway flute style learned from her mentor, Mike Rafferty. Lesl is a great resource within the Irish flute playing community as an instructor and performer." 5 stars. Lesl is an excellent teacher who goes above and beyond in enabling the student to understand and practice the lessons. Her experience and subject knowledge is vast. An added benefit I have found from her lessons is 'learning how to learn'!" - Alan F, 2023
